Vicksburg Military Park

The Ironclad built in 1862- 7 of them in 100 days for $100,000 each --helped he union protect the Mississippi.  It sunk by a landmine (first) in the Yazoo River (subsidary of Mississippi by Vicksburg). It was raised and restored in 1962.  Reminded us of movie Sahara.

1300 monuments and statues in this mark where the battle and 47 day siege of Vicksburg took place.  Lots of troops from IL.  This monument and many more are a tribute to the Illinois union soldiers.  Lots of Ohio as well. General Lee thought if you could control Vicksburg, you could control traffic and supplies on the Mississippi.  the Union couldn't conquer Vicksburg but pretty much starved them out until the Rebels surrendered Vicksburg on July 4, 1863.  same time as Gettysburg).  War continued for another 21 months.
