USS Alabama

USS Alabama
We were going to take the ferry across - a short jaunt to Mobile, Alabama from Perdido Key, FL.  Mike noticed the sign saying the ferry was closed because of high winds.  We went around the bay by highway- Cass driving- probably 50 miles.  We passed a Lamberts Cafe where they throw rolls.  It was packed with an hour's waiting line so we didn't experience it.
The WWII destroyer ( destroyers are named after states; battleships after people), USS Alabama was impressive.  We scoured that ship, top to bottom.  It had nine 16" guns that could accurately shoot 21 miles, 20 5"/38caliber guns, 48 40mm guns & 52 20mm guns.   It was commissioned August 16,1942 and earned 9 battle stars and shot down 22 enemy planes.  Usually had 2500 crew on board.  Rene gained great respect for her uncles who served on similar size ship, the USS South Dakota.

The Drum submarine was just as impressive.  There was no height limitation to be in a compact sub, just can't wear glasses or false teeth so you could use the Molson, in case you had to bite the air bag to ascend to the surface in case of emergency. (Policy after a lot died in a tragedy before invention of the Molson.)  In the picture by Cass is a veteran volunteer who has been restoring the Drum the last 7 years, thanks to donations of steel, paint, rental equipment and more from companies like Stanley, Sherman Williams and the list here.  This country is certainly a better place because of the generosity of people willing to share their God given time and talents.  We are blessed.
