See you later Alligator

Air boat ride to find gaters and other wildlife was great fun. Charismatic guide scared us with alligators and banked us around corners as he sped to new channels. Did you know the channels were cleared to harvest cypress trees years ago and they've never grown back.

Learned about a new creature I had never heard of: a Nutria or Norway rat. They look like a beaver with a round tail. They are quite invasive; in fact the gov't will pay $6 for each tail brought in. We found a number of dead nutria washed up on the shore without tails but they would soon be devoured by other species in the wild, our guide assured us. Even the wildlife biology major on the tour, nicknamed Cletis by the guide, agreed it was a good thing to get ride of these animals as they were destroying the swampland.
