Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum

I took all the pictures with my camera so will add them later but what a treasure. Carrabelle was the training ground for amphibious military landings during WWII.  Camp Gordon Johnston museum was a treasure.

The army has way more watercraft vessels than the Navy but the Navy's are large ships.  This army training ground  prepared GIs for the jungle and for landing on beaches in landing vehicles,25,000 at a time. Over 250,000 trained here for DDay at  Normandy and for fighting and landing on islands in the Pacific.   The first amphibious vessel was invented by someone from Florida.

These twins had shoeshine kits built by their big brother.  As kids in Carrabelle they shined shoes for GIs for 5 cents a shoe, some weeks bringing home $20 to help their mom.

The surprise to Mike and I were the German submarines around the Florida coast.  400 US vessels were sunk by the Germans. Blackout curtains were made in Daytona Beach and were required to blackout lights along the coast, so our shipping vessels and boats would not be illuminated by shore lights.   How and where did the German subs get supplies this far from home?  Any ideas?
